The Expression of an Impression

Niagara Falls Trip

Spring 2010

"A picture is the expression of an impression. If the beautiful were not in us, how would we ever recognize it?"

~Ernst Haas

The water rushes and roars as it pours over the massive falls. Mist covers the depths below. To witness such a wonder is simply magical and breathtaking.

When watching the Maid of the Mist come within such a short distance of one of nature’s powerful creations, one wonders if it is possible for the falls to suck up the life of this boat – one wonders if this boat shall ever be seen again. Sure, the driver of the boat does this numerous times a day, but there is that chance that the motor could die, and the little tiny ship will be lost forever.

This was my fear before riding upon this vessel. Would I make it through this miraculous journey alive? I was continually reassured that it was quite safe, and that it would be an experience I would never forget.

This was the truth. The experience I had is one the photos cannot even fully capture. All of the human senses were aroused. The taste, smell, and touch of the heavy mist, the sound of the roaring falls, the sight of the thousands and thousands of gallons of water pouring over the falls. It was a real thrill!
